Mission Assessment Process
Notes from the First Session

Prayer & Introductions
We began the session with an opening prayer and introductions by everyone, including how long we’ve been attending Gethsemane and what we’re looking forward to most this summer.

Gospel Based Discipleship
To help focus our mission assessment work in the Gospel, we gathered in small groups of four to read and reflect on Ephesians 4: 1-6, thinking about what words or phrases stand out to us, what the Gospel says to us personally, and what the Gospel calls us to do as leaders within our faith community.

Community Covenant
As a group, we discussed the norms we want to establish for our effort. What are the things the group needs in order to fully participate in the process?

  • Each person’s voice is heard.
  • Freedom to be direct and honest.
  • Freedom to disagree without being disagreeable.
  • Our conversations and contributions will assume good will, good intent, and positive outcomes.
  • Start and end times are important.
  • Value compromise.
  • Willingness to take personal risks or be vulnerable in conversation.
  • Willingness to extend conversations beyond the MAP meetings.
  • Speak from personal experiences with “I” statements, rather than speaking for others with “we/you” statements.
  • Maintain a single conversation, keeping interruptions and side conversations minimal.
  • Don’t hog the floor, monitoring your own participation. W.A.I.T. = Why am I talking? Why aren’t I talking?
  • Listen to truly hear and understand.
  • Seek and encourage diverse points of view.
  • It’s okay to invite participation, but also okay to pass. No one will be put ‘on the spot.’
  • It’s okay to laugh and have fun! Enjoy the process.
  • Recognize and acknowledge healthy tension.
  • Remember that we’re here to identify “What is God calling Gethsemane to be?”
  • We are careful to call ourselves a community, careful about other labels.
  • All conversations will be transparent to the whole Gethsemane family,
    unless someone identifies a personal contribution they’d like to have kept confidential.

We will briefly revisit our community covenant as needed throughout the process, allowing for changes.

Fun Fact
The average Sunday attendance of an Episcopal faith community in Minnesota is 30 to 40 people.

Wrap-Up
Amanda asked for a quick check-in about how we’re feeling after tonight’s work.

The next session on May 14 at 7:00 p.m. will use the Appreciative Inquiry process to uncover positive stories of mission within Gethsemane, allowing us to draw on positive energy as we begin to explore what makes our faith community unique. This session will also focus on discerning gifts and introducing the 5 Marks of Mission.

We closed the evening with prayer at 9:00 p.m.
